King Estate first introduced the ‘Domaine’ label in 1997 to showcase fruit sourced exclusively from our 100% organically-grown estate. Since the estate vineyard was planted in 1991, we have closely observed each block’s development, and noted that many have special character and uniquely express their micro-terroir. A select few blocks, through a meticulous lot selection process, find their way into our ‘Domaine’ bottlings, and sometimes are bottled on their own.
2009 Domaine Pinot Noir Block 4C is one such wine. Block 4C is situated in Bellpine soil in a north- to east-facing swale of 800-900 ft elevation in the very southeast corner of our estate vineyard. Uniquely trellised in the single–wire droop system, the vines receive maximum sun exposure throughout the growing season. Block 4C is planted to a clone called Colmar 538. Less well known than the Dijon clones, 538 is late-ripening and shows particularly well in warmer years. Colmar 538 is a Pinot Noir cultivar originating from France known for expressing tea-like flavors. Block 4C comprises approximately 3 acres and is the only block in our Domaine vineyard planted to this unique clone.
The 2009 vintage produced healthy fruit with good maturity and yields. We experienced a dry summer, and though September and October were cooler than expected an above average heat summation (2050 growing degree days as compared to an average of 1800) meant the fruit was fully ripe when harvested on October 11th.
The distinctive characters of Block 4C allowed it to earn its own bottling and inclusion in our Domaine program. We hope you will enjoy this special block designate bottling, as well as the contribution they have made to our 2009 Domaine Pinot Noir.
