King Estate first introduced the ‘Domaine’ label in 1997 to showcase fruit sourced exclusively from our 100% organically-grown estate. Since the estate vineyard was planted in 1991, we have closely observed each block’s development, and noted that many have special character and uniquely express their micro-terroir. These are the special blocks that through a meticulous lot selection process find their way into our ‘Domaine’ bottlings, and sometimes an entire lot or a portion of that lot is bottled on its own.

In 2008 Block 4D the ‘Blackjack’ block produced especially small grapes with very concentrated flavors. The 4.8 acre 4D block is planted to the early-ripening 777 clone, and is situated in a north to east-facing swale of 800-900 ft elevation in the very southeast corner of the estate vineyard. Uniquely trellised in the ‘droop’ system, the grapes receive elevated sun exposure throughout the growing season.

Block 4D’s distinctive character earned the block its own bottling and inclusion in our Domaine program. We hope you will enjoy this special block designate bottling, as well as the contribution it has made to our 2008 Domaine Pinot Noir.
